Why Look at the Night Sky?

Lots of reasons! Many people like the scientific aspects. Others enjoy the precision of tracking down elusive stars, planets and other astronomical objects. Some relish the opportunity to make real, valuable contributions to science (few hobbies nowadays can make that claim.) Nature lovers simply like being outside at night and enjoying the crickets, frogs and other wildlife (not to mention the occasional patrolling police officer).

Astronomy for me represents, more than most other hobbies, an opportunity to appreciate and ponder something much bigger than ourselves: the universe. Looking at the night sky can be a transcendent, religious experience humbling and invigorating at the same time.
But most of all, it's fun and family oriented. Individuals, parents and children can participate with a minimum of equipment (remember: eyes and a brain!)
